Okay, so I use him as the butt of some jokes (you have to when there's three kids running around).
But I really, really like my milkman.
He brings us milk.
And cheese (cottage, Tillamook cheddar).
And if we're nice, coffee, too.
Infact, he also supplies the local Tulley's coffee shops with their milk. Even my daughter's school gets the milk.
Why is it good?
Well, it's good because they don't use BGH (Bovine Growth Hormones), or other icky stuff in their process.
AND my milk isn't a loss leader for my pocketbook. It is always $2.88 per gallon. 1 year ago, and even last week.
And they've been a family farm since the 1920s...this is, I believe the third generation to run it.
So, our wonderful guvmint has, through the USDA, declared that farms which produce less than 350,000 gallons of milk to sell it to a "milk pool."
Though that might be fun to swim in, and good for the skin, it sucks for the small farmer. Because they would have to, in return, buy the milk back at a higher price than what they sold it...and it would run their farm out of business.
So eventhough the myth of a family farm being lost by the estate tax is still a myth. This USDA proposal could put many family daries out of business.
And I'd lose my milkman.
Party of little government, my ass.
Take a moment to ask the USDA to not take these measures. It's bad for the country, bad for the free marketplace and bad for my milkman.
