A few months ago there was a small flurry of diaries about CIA kidnappings in Italy, with the kidnapped ending up in Egypt for a little out-sourced torturing. This past Sunday,
this diary pointed out a recent story about the 13 CIA operatives living large while waiting to swoop down on the Muslim suspects. This is just icing on the cake - the cake itself is pretty rotten. Ask the Italian government.
News coming out of Italy reports that the Italian government is pissed. It is no surprise, at least to anyone who has paid any attention these past 4 years, that Bush Co. would betray its own mother to achieve its ends.
The Italian government, trying to do its part in stamping out or at least monitoring terrorist suspects on its own turf, is rightly outraged that the US government not only had 13 agents camped out in Milan, but that they also removed suspects from their country without their knowledge.
As the Italians point out, these actions undermine other countries' efforts to investigate terrorist suspects and gather intelligence vital to protecting their own citizens. They also rightly point out the (continued, brazen) hypocrisy behind the US government's words and their actions. For example, Condi Rice's recent little lecture circuit, during which she shakes a finger at Egypt over their lack of transparent elections and uneven applications of justice, seems even more hollow in light of the apparent handing over of the CIA kidnapped suspects to Egyptian authorities.
