Why did the guy cross the border with a bloody chainsaw, a homemade sword, a hatchet, a knife, and brass knuckles?
Because he could.
More beyond the edge of reality.
Seems that on April 25, Gregory Despres, a naturalized US citizen, arrived at the US-Canadian border crossing at Calais, Maine, carrying a cache of weapons.
Now this doesn't come down to terroristic plots, extremist cells, nor the right-wing-federal-building-bombing-looney.
No, it's simply appears to be a case of mental illness manifesting itself in violence, resulting in at least two deaths and a head in a pillow case on the kitchen floor.
When, according to the article linked above,
Despres was questioned for two hours before he was released.
and
Despres could not be detained because he is a naturalized U.S. citizen and was not wanted on any criminal charges on the day in question.
you begin to ask why there aren't any laws that turn away people at the border when they try to bring in weapons? We're not talking disposable butane lighters that you have to drop into the contraband box before going through security at the airport -- we're talking about weapons that have little or no other use than to do damage to people or property.
Why? Because the rules aren't there to turn away someone who attempts this. And who's fault is this? Who is the single most powerful person in the US with the 'political capital' necessary to institute these rules?
The most impotent reindeer of all: Georgie the coke-nosed reindeer, of course.
