The new Gallup poll (released on CNN), the first after the London bombings, shows a small dip in war support and huge uptick in the belief that the Iraq war made the US "less safe." The poll was conducted July 7-10 with 1006 respondants.
First, the war questions.
All in all, do you think it was worth going to war in Iraq, or not?
Worth it - 44% (46%)
Not worth it - 56% (55%)
No opinion - 3% (2%)
Do you think the war with Iraq has made the U.S. safer -- or less safe -- from terrorism?
Safer - 40% (44%)
Less safe - 54% (39%)
No change - 5% (13%)
This is the worst rating for the war since the 37-55 answer for that question in June 2004, after Abu Ghraib.
Now, terror questions.
How likely is it that there will be further acts of terrorism in the United States over the next several weeks?
Very/somewhat - 55% (35%)
Not too/not at all - 44% (63%)
Who do you think is currently winning the war against terrorism?
US/allies - 34% (36%)
Neither side - 44% (41%)
Terrorists - 21% (20%)
How much confidence do you have in the Bush administration to protect U.S. citizens from future acts of terrorism?
Great deal - 23% (23%)
Moderate amount - 38% (38%)
Not much - 24% (21%)
None - 14% (17%)
Despite the decline in all indicators of war and anti-terror support, Bush's approval rating rose from 46-51 to 49-48.
