After reading
rangershade's, recommended
diary, I was reminded of another story that I have not heard about recently in the media, the order from Federal Judge Alvin Hellerstein to the DOD to redact and release more video and photos of abuse that occured at Abu Ghraib.
The
order, from the United States District Court Southern District, directed the Pentagon to redact and release a series of photographs and videos under a the terms of a
FOIA request from the ACLU. The only problem is that the deadline for the DOD to act was
June 30th, 2005.
The lack of news about this makes me wonder what is going on? I don't know enough about the court system to answer that question, but this is a deadline that may have as much importance as the Iraq status report the DOD was supposed to have turned over.
These movies and photos are from the CD turned in by whistleblower Sgt. Jospeph Darby, however it may be that the ones the court has ordered released show levels of abuse far worse than the photo's of Lyndie England and her cohorts that were released earlier. It may be that these are the ones that Seymour Hersh was refering to when he said that the cameras were rolling as boys were sodomized and that left members of Congress shaken. Even the Republicans used words such as "appalling" (Frist, although he may have been refering to the photos that have since been made public.
