I would argue that we Americans should have more medications available without prescription. There are lots of medications that people can only get by prescription, but since they can't afford to see the Doctor, because they don't have health insurance, they don't get access to medications that they need.
One way to solve this problem, or ameliorate it somewhat, would be to make more medications available without a prescription.
The classic example that comes to mind is medicine for pain that contains codeine. It is sold over the counter in Canada, but not in America. Why? Apparently, Canada thinks the citizens there can handle it, and they do handle it.
Another example would be sleeping medications like Ambien. Why couldn't it be made available over the counter?
Another example is the new medicine that can cure flu or the common cold, or at least shorten the length of a cold. But it's only available by prescription, and a hell of a lot of people can't get a prescription for it, or by the time they get to the doctor, it's too late.
