Pro choice does not equal pro abortion, nor does it equal anti-prolife. You can personally believe that abortioin is murder and still be pro-choice just as you can personally believe that abortion is a great birth control method and be pro choice. Or you can be anywhere between those two extremes and be pro-choice.
I am sick and tired of pro-choice being portrayed as pro-abortion by the MSM, the right and even by many people on the left. Pro-choice means exactly what it says. Its your choice. A person who is pro-choice recognizes that no matter what their personal opinion on the subject is there are people who disagree with their view.
They recognize that abortion is a complex issue. Where you stand on it involves strongly held personal, philosophical, and religeous beliefs. One of the biggest questions in abortion is what is a human being and when does a fertilized egg become one? The answer to that question is as varied as the answer to the abortion question as a whole.
The reason the answers to that question are so varied lie in the fact that the answers come from subjective belief systems. Science can't provide us with a reliable objective measuring stick everyone can agree with so we fall back on what we feel based on those belief systems to be right.
Pro-choice people recognize this fact and believe that the government has no business dictating to everyone which set of belief systems they have to use. We have all drawn a line somwhere on this issue. The fact that no two lines are in exactly the same place should be the biggest indicator that the government should keep its nose out of it.
If you are against abortion you shouldn't be spending your time trying to outlaw it. You should be spending your time fighting poverty, Developing support groups for single mothers, removing the social stigma for having a child out of wedlock, or in high-shcool. You should be striving to get rid of the antiquated puritan/victorian attitudes towards sex, advocate proper and explicit sex education in the schools, advocate the use of contraceptives. You should be trying to stop the treatment of children as if they were personal property and try and develope a more comunal approach to child rearing.
All those things I listed above if done have a real impact in reducing the number of abortions. But unfortunately most of the people who are against abortions are also against most if not all of those effective means of reducing the demand for abortions in the first place.
What is my personal belief on abortion? I personally believe the only time an abortion should be performed is when in consultation with their doctor it is determined that for health reasons either the mothers or the fetus's that an abortion is proper course of action. Yet I am pro-choice becuase I recognize the complexities of the issue.
Our goal should be to change our society and its behaviors to such that the above becomes the reality without having to outlaw anything.
