Today, a few of our local activists organized a silent protest at Miller Park in downtown Chattanooga for the 3rd anniversary of the Downing Street Minutes. Usually, when we do these things only a handful or so show up, but not today. When I arrived which was 40 minutes late, there were all kinds of elderly people waving flags and holding signs " Stop the Lies" , "1768 Died - Stop the War" , etc.. What in the world has happened in Chattanooga? Even the local television stations were present, wow, this is a surprise.
My friend and organizer of the event told me our local assisted living residence, http://alexianvillage.com showed up to help with the event. Not only were they present they brought the Downing Street Memo petition with them and lots of people were signing it. It is thrilling to witness the activism of our elderly or any activistm in our area.
One woman I spoke with, Mary Lou, told me how one evening she was watching C-Span and some Congressmen were in the basement of the Capitol holding hearings about the Downing Street Minutes. After watching C-Span, she told her friends she had to do something. This reminded her of Watergate. She told me to go to
http://downingstreetmemo.com for more information. I was impressed, to say the least, with the preparation and spririt of our elderly Democratic women. We exchanged emails and I told her about our party blog site
http://hamdems.org. She told me she wanted to know more about the blogs. Yeah!Yeah!! Mary Lou!!
One other small note of interest during our protest, many passerby's asked what DSM is and what it means; however, two teenage guys from Germany with their guide can by and wanted their photo taken holding our signs. They knew all about the Downing Street Minutes over in Germany.
Sadly, when I need my camera the most, I never have it on me; however, our local press showed up so maybe I will get one of their photos for our local site.
