Playing hide the candidate just isn't working for the Jerry Kilgore campaign in Virginia's governor's race. What was once a ten point lead in the polls has now dwindled to a statistical dead heat in the contest with Democrat Tim Kaine.
I think Virginia voters are starting to catch on that Republicans are ashamed of their own candidate. First, they hire an actor to dub Jerry's lines in a radio ad since Jerry's actual speaking voice sounds like Ned Flanders on crack and in the only debate so far live television coverage was nixed and use of audio from the event was severely restricted by Jerry's handlers.
As Kaine himself said after Kilgore at the last minute nixed plans for a subsequent televised debate in Roanoke:
"It's hard to say what Jerry Kilgore is hiding from. This pattern of avoiding debates should raise a red flag with the voters. Virginia has a strong tradition of leadership, and when a candidate running for the state's highest office flinches again and again from the chance to stand on a stage with his opponents and share his vision for Virginia, he shows he is unworthy of carrying on that tradition."
It's going to be an interesting four months between now and the election. As a bred and born Virginian, I'm increasing optimistic that the voters of the Commonwealth will once again make the right choice and elect a Democrat Governor
