George W. Bush could regain the moral high ground tomorrow. He can, but he won't. He could revoke Karl Rove's security clearance, or even get him to take a leave of absence for personal reasons. He could say
I have known Karl for a long time. I am convinced he would not knowingly break the law. Unfortunately, the Nation is more important than one man. Until the investigation is over, he has become a distraction. I promised the most ethical administration in US history, and even the appearance of impropriety will not stand. Bush can take this issue back with
one brief statement, but he won't.
He can ask Cheney to remove Libby (for lying). He can remove McClellan (for lying). He can get Card to do his dirty work. He can get either of his AG's to come clean, but he won't. Why?
Because the people who normally tell him what to do are all GUILTY, and therefore he has to make this decision on his own. Mr. President, the gauntlet has been thrown down. Here is your chance to show some
moral leadership. It is not the crime, but the cover-up. Learn from history. After the disdain and contempt this administration has shown to both the media and the loyal opposition, we have no problem giving them all the rope it needs to hang itself. With every day that goes by with a "no comment", the President does even more damage to his administration. Either way, we win.
