I did some searching on this site, and didn't see any obvious posts or diaries that covered this topic, so I apologize if this has been covered before.
Via Buzzflash, we are informed of the beginnings of "Independent World Television"; intended to be a non-profit, sponsor-driven, world-wide broadcast network, presenting news of political and social import outside of the normal model of corporate- and/or government-controlled news media. The network appears to be the brainchild of a Toronto native filmmaker and CBC "veteran". More below the fold.
Having done a google news search, and looking over their "Press Release" section, it looks like the biggest papers that have covered the announcement so far have been
The Guardian, Variety, the Globe&Mail and the
Toronto Star. I don't see much evidence of coverage in any of the bigger US media channels.
Their advertised programming looks heavily tilted towards news reporting and analysis, with a smattering of culture and entertainment thrown into the mix.
The idea definitely seems to be one whose time has come. And the global reach of this venture would allow it to tap into the Global netroots community for funding, which should theoretically make the venture workable.
This is something I could definitely see putting some money behind, though I haven't yet. Anyone have any information about this project beyond what comes up in the first page of a google search?
