I'm more of a commentator than a diary writer, but I'm in disbelief that some here would consider Alberto Gonzales to be the lesser of two evils in respect to a Supreme Court nomination.
You want to talk about how your rights are at stake, fine. But I ask that you first consider the rights that our attorney general has already violated: basic human rights. If you permit yourself to look beyond these violation than you are, in essence, excusing them.
Gonzales has already allowed us to look inside of his soul. We have seen him for what he truly believes. He believes that abusing people who already lack many rights (prisoners) is, in some cases, acceptable.
I don't know exactly what role Gonzales played in laying the groundwork for prisoner abuse. What I can know is that he excused it. He permitted the legal holes, or the clauses, or whatever mechanism is legally necessary to allow these horrible abuses. At the very least he did nothing to prevent abuse. Furthermore, we have seen when Gonzales was given a chance to oppose the permissive nature of his own legal work before the comittee considering him for AG, he could not. He could not find a way to protect our country, and protect human rights. I find this deplorable, do you?
If you can recognize the points I'm making, then it should be clear that Gonzales is in no way acceptable. He has shown by omission that he lacks no boundaries when it comes to upholding rights, so he cannot be trusted with anyone's rights.
Please oppose Gonzales; if not to protect your own rights, then to restore those basic ones he has denied others.
Thanks for listening.
