We're being so aggressively "reassured" that the nation-building Constitution of Iraq is going well that one has to really, really worry about how things are actually proceeding.
Here's one item to note: the issues that have not yet been resolved are being framed a "couple" of "details." That's good, because the deadline, for some reason, is tomorrow.
These details happen include:
- Whether the country will be a federation or not, the so-called Neopolitan (three-stripe) Iraq vs. a more integrated nation.
- Whether the Sharia will be "the" or "a" source of Iraqi law. That Iraq will be an Islamic Republic is already agreed to, of course.
Calling these two items "details" is preposterious. Imagine a US constitutional convention where the notion of keeping the existing 50 states was unresolved And whether Christianity would be considered the official state religion.
Under those circumstances, would we say that we were close to having a Constitution? Hey, it's only two items, right?
