This is based on an article in Crain's Chicago Business dated 7-25. I searched dKos for mention of this, so hopefully this isn't a repeat. I figured I'd document this in case any other media outlets pick up on this story.
The headline is:
Fitzgerald hire raises eyebrows
Staffer played key role in selecting prosecutor
and it appeared on the cover of Chicago business weekly "Crain's Chicago Business" the week of July 25, 2005.
The meat of the story is that US Attorney and Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitgerald hired Margaret Hickey, as an Assistant US Attorney. Prior to that time, she was a chief of staff and general counsel to former Senator Peter Fitgerald and was involved in the process that selected Patrick Fitgerald for the US Attorney position.
The article goes on to present Fitzgerald's explanation of the hiring process, along with some quotes playing up the ethics angle, and suggesting that Fitgerald should have recused himself from the hiring process. Obviously there is some irony here, because prior to Fitzgerald's appointment as Special Prosecutor his highest profile cases in Illinois were his investigations of Republicans at the state level, and Democrats in Chicago. Frankly, this article probably does more to serve Illinois politicians and indictees, than it does anybody at the national level.
