Many of us remember the infamous 7 minutes when Bush sat in that schoolroom while our nation was under attack, looking like a frightened, weak, incompetent leader who knew he was in way over his head. He was the same guy who had been warned about a possible attack all summer long, and memorably in the famous 8/6/01 PDB, ("Bin Laden determined to strike in the US") but went fishing that very same day instead of acting to protect our nation - then when the attacks that might have been prevented with competent leadership actually happened, he froze.
And now we have the same "leader", who, having cut funding for needed buttressing of the levees, having done nothing to prepare for this disaster before it happened, having put incompetent cronies in charge at FEMA and other key agencies, once again showing the world that he is an incompetent fool who can't rise to the occassion when our nation most needs leadership. He didn't want to be President to make this a better nation, but only to ensure that his powerful cronies gained even more wealth and power, which has been the sole focus of his Presidency. Is America finally starting to understand whom we have entrusted our nation's well-being, and in some cases, our very lives, to?
Will Americans make the connection that they were unwilling to make in the aftermath of 9/11, when they were so desperate for leadership that they denied reality rather than face up to the fact that they don't have it? We will see. It's too late in the sense that he's already been elected, but hopefully not too late in the sense of them asking hard questions of the party that put him before us as its nominee and has supported him avidly ever since. Americans who voted for him, or didn't vote, also need to ask themselves some hard questions about that decision.
