I just went to a site that promotes riding a bike to work.
It happens to have a compilation of 2000 data on car-free households.
In 2000, over 27% of households in New Orleans DID NOT HAVE AN AUTOMOBILE. And the percentage of families in New Orleans living below the poverty line in 2000 was about 23%.
I'm getting pretty sick of Homeland Secretary Chertoff and FEMA Director Brown (who was an estate planning lawyer before coming to FEMA and whose only qualification for the job appears to be that he was a Bush donor/fundraiser) trying to divert blame from their own sublime incompetence in the wake of Katrina -- and blame the victims. They are now repeating certain talking points: "These people chose to stay...these people decided to stay...these people ignored the warnings..." But the Census Bureau shows that many of these people had no means of getting out of the city. They're poor.
These idiots need to resign...NOW.
