According to Pasado Safe Haven, one of the several animal rescue groups in New Orleans, "Houston Based Halliburton and Subsidiary KBR is coming through big time for the animals. They're mobilizing refrigerated trucks from a multi-state area to help us pull out more animals from the hot zone. They were fast, helpful, and willing to do whatever they could on a Saturday morning to make this life-saving gift work! They've even offered to try and bring housing for the volunteers who have been sleeping on the floor! Thank you HALLIBURTON!"
I'm not sure who mobilized Halliburton - whether they're doing it under their no-bid for FEMA, to help someone politically or as an act of corporate giving, but I'm glad to see it happening.
I have ranted on this site previously that the Humane Society of the U.S., which has been raising buttloads of money hand over fist in connection with Katrina, should have hired someone to come in and help with animal rescue a long time ago. As it is now, the animals the rescue groups are finding in homes are starved. They are now starting to find some animals alive but beyond saving. Pasado euthanized its first animal yesterday, and the rescue groups are asking for volunteers able to do field euthanasia.
I sincerely hope that animal rescue becomes part of the disaster relief planning in the future. This disaster has caused unimaginable pain and suffering for thousands of people, and having to leave their animals behind just exacerbated it (and, don't forget, kept a lot of people from evacuating).
I never thought I'd say this, but to Halliburton and KBR: I'm glad you're there, for whatever reason. I hope it's not too late.
