I am telling this story mostly just to simply vent my frustration with regards to the unfeeling and callous Corporate world.
A friend of mine who is an animal lover here in NYC and does part time work at a shelter in which I am associated, went down to New Orleans to help rescue pets. She flew down there on her own dime, to help out anyway she could, but how was this news taken by her employer. Basically, they said if she went she would not have a job when she returned. So much for coming together in a crisis. My friend did go down to New Orleans and believe it or not was interviewed by Anderson Cooper on CNN, during one of her many pet rescues.
Fortunately, the shelter I do pro-bono work is extending her hours right now and this will help her until she finds another full time job in her profession (hair stylist).
I am so proud of my friend who makes little money for taking it upon herself to fly down to Louisiana to help out in a situation where she didn't even know anyone, but was drawn to the crisis simply because her she wanted to do the right thing and help.
I am writing this because to me this once again is another example of Corporate America showing its true face in a crisis. By the way her employer was Avon here in NYC.
Thanks for listening.
