Megachurches hold thousands of people, and usually contain large meeting halls, industrial kitchens, and even gymnasiums, making them some of the few large institutions that can readily accept refugees. The evangelical movements that operate these churches are largely centered in the South, making many of these churches within a day's drive of the Gulf Coast. A city like Houston or Atlanta might have a dozen large capacity megachurches, as well as many smaller congregations that could easily shelter a hundred refugees, making the collective carrying capacity of the churches equivalent to at least another Astrodome per city.
So - given that the Preznit's faith-based charity initiative is predicated on the idea that these types of institutions can provide aid and assistance to the afflicted better than the government could, how are they responding?
