Although I have detested the Bush administration since it began its reign of error, until the New Orleans disaster I did not actually fear it. Now, I believe that I share that fear with many Americans. What do I fear?
- I fear that any catastrophic event affecting my region of the country may put my life in danger because the Federal government will neglect or mismanage critical responsibilities.
- I fear that a sudden disease outbreak, like a Bird Flu pandemic, may kill me and my neighbors because our incompetent government will mishandle the crisis.
- I fear that our economy may suddenly plunge into a disastrous recession because of the accumulated strains of years of mismanagement.
- I fear that the bellicose and feckless foreign policy of this administration will trigger a nuclear war that kills me.
It is a terrible thing to fear one's own government, but it is the harsh reality of living in a decadent nation that has lost its bearings and elected a wretchedly inadequate leader.
