This is by far been one of the worst weeks I have ever lived through. I am out of work, so I have been watching a lot of the coverage of what is happening in New Orleans on the TV and reading about it on the internet.
As the events have unfolded out there, as we have seen the heartbreaking scenes of people stranded in the Crecent City waiting for help that never has come and as we have seen how our goverment in Washington react, I have become increasingly angry about what has happened and what the GOP are doing to treat this problem.
It didn't become clear for me, though, until tonight, when Kayne West spelled it out on NBC - Bush hates black people. In fact, you can say that for the majority of the Republican Party. They are a racist party.
Now, I know that there are Republicans out there that are racially tollerant and do believe in civil rights. The problem is, they aren't in the leadership of the GOP. The party is in control of men and women who either were part of the Southern wing of the Democratic Party back during the struggles for civil rights or those who were decendents from those who believe that black people are not equal to whites.
Over the last fourty years, starting with Barry Goldwater's run for the Presidency, the GOP has courted the votes of racists in the south and around the country. Nixon and Reagan were the benefits of this as those who hate blacks moved parties. As the GOP has grabbed more power, they have moved to deny blacks, other minorities and poor people of protection, while enabling the super-rich who funded the conservative movement to raid the US for all the riches they could get.
It may seem dark, and things may get darker in the next couple of weeks, but I can see a silver lineing out of all this.
The people are seeing how inept, pathetic and evil that the GOP has become. They are seeing a government that is unable and (I beleive) unwilling to help those who need it the most. Instead of getting the help to New Orleans, the GOP wants to kill the Death Tax in the Senate next week!
Now, if this had happened to a city where there were white people, I know that Bush would be out there immediately to assure the victims and get aid to them right away. Because New Orleans is majority black, I honestly believe now that the government sees it better to let the blacks die without any help, then rebuild New Orleans for the whites and rich (with Condi Rice, their house negro, allowed to come along for the ride).
I may sound like I am ranting, but a few weeks ago these opinions would have seemed crazy to me. Not now. George W. Bush has declared war on those who are not part of his base. Now, we all out there need to figure out what to do to fight these people and start making a new world out of it.
This is a time where I am angry and sad, but I see this as the beginning of the end of the ere where conservatives rulled this country. This disaster will be a wakeup call for those who were following Bush and his bunch of gangsters to wake up and realize that this man is not working for the people. By the time the '06 elections come, I hope we have a pissed off country ready to throw out the bums and restore trust, compassion and compitance in our goverment.
