Here we go again. The Christofascists are back, exploiting what will probably end up as the worst natural disaster in American history--the predictions of 10,000 dead would surpass the 6,000 total of the 1900 Galveston hurricane--to promote their worldview.
Franklin Graham, Billy Graham's son, on Fox News(where else?):
This happens when we take God out of our schools and God out of our society.
More Wingnuttery after the break...
Michael Marcavage of Repent America, an organization whose stated purpose is to "declare the WORD OF GOD in front of the abortuaries and sexually perverse establishments, and at the homosexual parades and other sin celebrations and call them to repentance," quotes Matthew 5:45, "[God] sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust," in lauding Katrina because
[T]his act of God destroyed a wicked city . . . From 'Girls Gone Wild' to 'Southern Decadence,' New Orleans was a city that had its doors wide open to the public celebration of sin. New Orleans was also known for its Mardi Gras parties where thousands of drunken men would revel in the streets to exchange plastic jewelry for drunken women to expose their breasts and to engage in other sex acts. This annual event sparked the creation of the "Girls Gone Wild" video series. Furthermore, Louisiana had a total of ten abortion clinics with half of them operating in New Orleans, where countless numbers of children were murdered at the hands of abortionists.
He concluded his statement with the hope that "From the devastation may a city full of righteousness emerge."
Enter Fred Phelps, proprietor of the always unintentionally hilarious Website God Hates Fags (actually, I guess they're hilarious except when they show up to protest the funeral of your child who was killed in Iraq). On Katrina, Fred says:
Thank God for Katrina
New Orleans, symbol of America, seen for what it is: a putrid, toxic, stinking cesspool of fag fecal matter . . . . America is irreversibly doomed. It is a sin to pray for the good of this evil fag nation . . . . It is a sin NOT to rejoice when God executes His wrath and vengeance upon America . . . . Pray for more dead bodies floating on the fag-semen-rancid waters of New Orleans.
Even New Orleans' own religious zealots have gotten into the act. Rev. Bill Shanks, pastor of New Covenant Fellowship of New Orleans, is quoted (curiously, on the Website of "Agape Press,"--agape, of course, means "love") as saying:
New Orleans now is abortion free. New Orleans now is Mardi Gras free. New Orleans now is free of Southern Decadence and the sodomites, the witchcraft workers, false religion -- it's free of all of those things now . . . God simply, I believe, in His mercy purged all of that stuff out of there -- and now we're going to start over again.
To each of these completely outrageous diatribes, the famous quote from Joseph Welch at the McCarthy hearings is relevant: "Have you no sense of decency, sir? At long last, have you left no sense of decency?"
If I believed in hell, I'd be certain that God was preparing a special place for these people there.
There must be other examples out there. Have you seen any?
