In these days of tragedy I cannot help but think of the quote 'These are the times that try men's souls.' More below the fold...
Well, it only applies if America still has a soul. I am hoping and waiting for a revolution...not a physical one but one of conscience. Will it appear? Are we as Americans so sold on the idea of an ownership society that we cannot see what the loss of compassion and the loss of community has cost us? Can those of us that consider ourselves religious members of any denomination truly look at our present day government and say that they are representative of our values? Is our consumer driven, throw away society so callous that we are willing to throw away people as easily as we throw away our daily trash? So many people say politics is not important but do they really think government just happens? Do they really think that if they elect someone because they LIKE them that the person will suddenly be bestowed with the knowledge and ability to lead a country? Will the politics of personality and beauty continue to trump the politics of brains and competence? Will party over country prevail or will we realize that what our elected officials bring to the table really does matter more than their political affiliation. Will people begin to see beyond their own self interests and realize that a strong community IS the most important self interest we can pass on to our children I guess we will see in the next few days, weeks, months, and years. I am so tired of being outraged, so tired of feeling hatred and loathing for what is being done to my country. I need to see people, thousand of them, millions of them begin to say 'NO MORE'. I need to see headlines in all the major newspapers and on the tv screens that say 'We have been lied to". I need to see that America does indeed have compassion, does indeed have a conscience, and doesn't think that human life is no more valuable than today's trash.
I hope we can again find America's soul.
