Rasmussen has a new poll of the Montana Senate race:
Burns (R) 45%
Tester (D) 45%
Burns (R) 46%
Morrison (D) 43%
(January 9, 2005. MoE: 4.5%)
Wow. Thank God Burns isn't retiring, because this is a fight that I'm looking forward towards.
Our poll last September showed Burns enjoying 51% support from Montana voters when matched up with either man. Only 39% would have voted for Morrison, 38% for Tester.
At that time, 55% viewed the incumbent favorably. In our new survey of 500 Likely Voters, Senator Burns is still viewed favorably by 55%, but is now viewed unfavorably by 43%, up from 37%.
What amazes me most (besides how close the races are), is that Tester is doing incredibly. The most recent poll, from Mason-Dixon in December showed Burns defeating Tester 49% to 35%, and Morrison 46% to 40%. Tester has seemingly closed a fourteen point gap, and is doing better than Morrison. I expect that these results are far more the result of Abramoff than any campaiging done by either Democrat. As the scandal continues, and Tester and Morrison continue to campaign, these numbers should only improve.
