Despite his ardent support for the war, and most of the state of Connecticut against the war, Joe Lieberman still enjoys a rather healthy 62% approval rating from his constiuents. While support amongest Democrats have slipped a little, Republican support has remained strong according to a Newsday poll.
Many of you at Kos are railing against Lieberman for his war support. I am too. This war has been a fraud from the beginning. Almost 2200 American lives have been snuffed out for no good reason. But I have to tell all of you that Joe Lieberman will be a Senator for as long as he wants to be.
There have been rumors about a possible challenge to Lieberman, and it looks like the Democrats will announce someone in the not do distant future, but his chances of beating Lieberman are about as good as George Bush developing brains in the next 24 hours.
Whatever you think of Lieberman, remember one thing, he agrees with the Democrats about 80% of the time. If he didn't, he would not have run against Bush in the 2004 primaries. He just happens to be 100% wrong on his support for the war.
I think it's about time to realize that what Peter Beinart says is true. Joe Lieberman is not the enemy here, George Bush is. The Democratic party is supposed to be the big tent party. We as a party, are supposed to welcome people with diverse points of view, but over the past couple of years, with regards to Lieberman and the war, I haven't seen it. The Democrats are turing into the Republicans when it comes to other points of view on the war.
Disagree with Lieberman all you want, but have respect for his point of view as well.
