There are very few things I feel qualified to talk about on dailykos. The people here are so gd smart, educated, and informed, I can't hold my own on many subjects. I most often talk about local activism, how to get involved with this bohemoth we like to call the Democratic Party, and Atheism. These are things I know.
There is one other thing. Being a woman. And just today, I was on a thread where women were talking about being attacked by other women for not fitting one mold or another. And yes, we do that to each other.
But I want to take just a second to ask all of us to put aside the different variations of feminism, levels of estrogen, what molds you fit and which ones you hate, and think about the prospect that the Dems may not filibuster Alito. (as many of you/us will say you predicted all along) And what that will mean for ALL of us.
What will an Alito Court mean to women who don't want children?
What will an Alito Court mean to women who don't believe their purpose is to submit to their husbands?
What will an Alito Court mean to women who believe they deserve equal pay for equal work done by a woman of equal experience?
What will an Alito Court mean to women who believe they are equally as intelligent as their male counterparts and deserve the opportunities to attend the same prestigious universities?
And then ask yourself what action is enough? Do you write your Senator? Do you write all the Senators on the Judiciary committee? Do you call the office of every democrat and give their staffers a piece of your mind?
Or does it require more? What is required of us today as a group of mostly white men threaten our reproductive rights? Our equal status?
I think it requires taking to the streets. I think it requires physically getting in their faces. I'm no radical. I work the system. I send my letters, emails and faxes. I sign my petitions.
But I am at the end of my rope. What will we do ladies? And men, what will you tell your daughters? Who has the reach, the organization, the skills to help us put together a demonstration that can be felt by the media? Who can make this happen, b/c I am sooo there.
