I find it amusing that O'Reilly characterizes anyone who isn't slavishly fawning over the president a "left-wing nutjob." If only that were the case.
I have seen the current "far, far left" (not the lefts of the 60's-90's) at Green Business Conferences, at Higher Education Conventions, at Queer Activist gatherings, at Veteran Peace Gatherings, at Earth First! forums. And they are brilliant.
I would like to take a moment to imagine an America that the cream of the "left-wing nutjobs" ran.
First, terrorism would be way, way down. Why? Because we wouldn't be maintaining and expanding military bases in the Middle East to start with. We wouldn't need to protect "our oil" because we'd be sinking every bit of the (what is it now, almost 2 trillion?) dollars we spend in Iraq and on 'Homeland Security' (ie, sweeping phone taps and overseas gulags) on alternative energy sources, and the infrastructure to support them. Biodiesel (from locally grown corn and soy), solar in the Southwest, windfarms offshore in SoCal and in prairie states, massive tax incentives for the manufacture and ownership of biodiesel cars and high-efficiency hybrids, greater tax burden for greater overall yearly emissions (depending on cars driven, distance, make, model, etc).
Our government level of spending on corporate welfare would not go up, it would simply be carefully targeted to support mom-and-pop operations, environmentally conscious businesses that treat their workers right, and businesses that refuse to outsource their labor. Our food would be healthier because we would offer big tax incentives for the growth of organic produce and raising of free-range and organically-fed livestock.
Campaign finance reform would do a scorched-earth job on our current system. Public airwaves, television, public websites with huge bandwidths would offer multiple free venues for candidates to communicate to the people. The revolving-door between lobbyists, government officials, and K-street would be jammed for good. Nonpartisan, independent ethics-watchdog organizations would be given real teeth, and power to subpoena and investigate.
We would apply to ourselves the same "election legitimacy" criteria that we apply to other countries (exit poll congruence, nonpartisan election officials, equal access to the polls, etc) and no "hackable" voting machines.
The government, because it would actually be by and for the people, would be a LOT less paranoid, and would feel far less of a need to spy and to regulate speech.
We would not be treating our rivers, oceans, lakes, atmosphere, and soil as a free garbage dump. We would make it a huge priority to not only reduce but ultimately eliminate toxic waste, again with targeted tax burdens/incentives, and stricter laws. We would drink out of plastic-like "corntainers" (which already exist) instead of plastic bottles, we would eat with and off of compostible cutlery (which also exists), we would have biodegradable plastics in every venue possible, we would clean and build with, and wear, nontoxic materials. Our motto would be "Waste=food," or "waste for us equals food for other lifeforms or processes." The concept would be extended to the technology cycle as well.
We would not use government to intrude on private lives. There would be no "government-sanctioned" marriage. Domestic partnerships in any form would receive equal government treatment. We would not be afraid to discuss sex and relationships in schools, so that there wouldn't be so much stigma and ignorance that generates self-destructive social activity (unprotected sex, etc). Abortion rates would diminish naturally (as has happened in Scandinavia) because people would be in stronger psychological places to plan carefully, and men would take greater responsibility in the "conception" phase.
There would be no social "charge" on GBLTQ living and issues. Focus would be on health of relationships only--communication, honesty, responsibility, etc.
Religion and spirituality would inform government but would not intrude upon it. Universal humanist tenets (which are also Christ's Golden Rule) would come to the forefront, especially regarding the poor. Poverty would be viewed as a systemic problem that needs addressing at all social and government levels.
Our borders would be softer. Welcoming "guest work" programs would be on the up-and-up, and corporations that hire undocumented workers at slave wages would be severely penalized.
Universal heath care would be guaranteed, but tax breaks would be given to nonsmokers and people who practice preventative health care measures (frequent exercise, yoga, therapy, etc).
The 'War on Drugs' would end, drugs decriminalized, and all efforts put into prevention and education. (There would still be stiff sanctions for DUI's, etc).
Natural places would be recognized as vital for our survival, our health, our psychological well-being, AND our economy. The Endangered Species Act would be extended, and more land would be put aside for parks and forests.
We would not be afraid to spend a great deal on education, at all levels.
The deal penalty would cease, and prisons would focus highly upon rehabilitation.
Life would suck a LOT less.
