This election cycle I wish the Democratic Party could think outside the box and take some risks for a change. Should the Party try something new, something sharp, effective, to energize the Democratic base and also debunk Bush's usual spin when he gives the SOTU(State of the Union) speech?
I came across this video from the Think Progress site, and I thought - Hey why can't we run a national TV and radio ad campaign to set the record straight when Bush gives his SOTU speech?
From Think Progress:
On January 31, President Bush will deliver his fifth State of the Union Address since becoming President. A review of his previous State of the Union addresses demonstrates that Bush often includes lofty, promising rhetoric but falls short on his pledges.
For example, this year, according to news reports, President Bush will "will attempt to shift focus from the polarizing war in Iraq to a more popular domestic priority: taming health care costs." But President Bush has pledged to tame health care costs in all his previous SOTUs. Meanwhile, the cost of health care continues to skyrocket.

I know that the DNC is organizing SOTU watch parties. But aren't we in essence preaching to the choir by only organizing watching parties? Why not reach out to independents, moderate Republicans, and who knows even change some minds of conservative Republicans?
Is money a major reason why we can't run a national TV ad campaign for a day or two? I'm hoping that's not the case. There's been a lot of talk from the Democratic base that our leadership hasn't been daring and bold enough, or challenged the Bush administration more often on their lies.
A national debunking TV ad campaign on the SOTU speech I think is a great opportunity for the Democrats. But this is only one idea. Is this a good idea? What other ideas can we come up with that would be very effective? Please share in the comments.
I will send the link to the DNC.
