When the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans, it was fair to say that I was overcome with a wide range of emotions: anger, compassion, fear, shame, sorrow... the list goes on. At the time of this disaster, gish and I had recently started experimenting with the creation of
industrial music. We started a band and called it Junk Sick Fuck Fest (I'm not sure why, really). We don't plan to ever get record deals or concert performances or anything. It's just an interesting hobby that allows us to express ourselves both artistically and politically.
Music downloads and more chatter after the flip...
So to cut to the chase, I wrote a song to help me get out some of those heavy emotions that I felt during the Katrina "rescue" effort. I don't plan on ever selling the song or anything like that, but I feel driven to get out there for people to listen to - especially fellow liberals. The song is called "Drowning" and is dedicated to all those who suffered during Katrina.
Recently, I submitted two mixes of the song (the Suffocated mix and FEMA mix) to CNET/Download.com's free music download service. The songs (and two others) were accepted and are now available for free download or streaming from their site. So I wanted to write this shameless self-promoting diary to let you know that these songs were out there, in case you want to give them a listen. You might like them, you might hate them. But please, give them a try and let me know what you think in the poll/comments. You can also rate the songs if you have a CNET account. Just keep in mind that we are unabashed rank amateurs at this stuff!
