To call attention to this crucial debate of liberty vs. security, lets organize simultaneous silent vigils across the country of peaceful gatherings of American citizens holding banners with Ben Franklin's timeless quote, "Those who would sacrifice liberty for security deserve neither". One would not have to be in a group to participate ... just wherever you are, at the appointed date and time, unfurl your banner and stand silently. The visual message would be powerful and would hopefully get the attention of LOCAL media.
We've got to do something to counteract Bush's "I'm Not a Crook" cross-country media tour. (Props to Sam Seder on Air America's The Majority Report for coining the "I'm No a Crook" phrase when referring to Bush's media blitz.)
Thoughts? Would simultaneous vigils like this be effective? Would it send a message? Can it be used to get the media's attention and most importantly KEEP focus on this issue?
I got this idea from the group of students who on 1/24 stood up during Gonzales' speech and unfurled their banner with Ben Franklin's quote. And it got the media's attention. There was a very powerful photo in the NY Times http://www.nytimes.com/... that spoke volumes about this issue now confronting our country. C-SPAN's Washington Journal lead off their show the next day discussing the student's action and asking the question "What's more important to you liberty or security?"
