There's a reason
The Freeway Blogger christened this activity freeway
blogging. Like Internet blog posts, freeway blog posts don't last long -- it's all about
placement. Just as a front page post on
Daily Kos scrolls away quickly but captures a huge number of eyeballs in its short life,
The Freeway Blogger is the
Markos Moulitsas Zuniga of freeway blogging.
To see how the numbers work, scroll past the seven photos of California freeway blogs at the second bullet (IMPACT....) in the first scroll box below.
You should never spend more than 50¢ on a freeway blog -- 25¢ for paint, 12.4¢ - 16.5¢ for a bungee cord (either 6 for 99¢ or 8 for 99¢ at 99¢ stores), and a few scraps of duct tape. See the fourth bullet below (
PAINT Method...) for an illustrated guide.
These blogs last hours, sometimes days, very rarely weeks. It's all about the number of impressions that they make.
Click the first bullet in the scroll box below. There's a photo there (that you can click to enlarge) of an IMPEACH freeway blog leaning against a retaining wall at the edge of a Safeway parking lot in the San Francisco Bay area.
Doesn't look very impressive, does it? -- certainly not compared to the San Francisco photo above it.
But it's actually the perfect freeway blog: (1) it's invisible from the parking lot, and extremely easy to place (park and drop); (2) it would require a long detour by someone seeing it from the highway and wanting to remove it; (3) it's not as impressive as an overpass post and therefore not as much of a target for removal anyway; and (4) it's getting a huge number of hits from Interstate 80.
Click here and scroll down to the third photo -- that Safeway parking lot post has been getting thousands of hits per hour for five days (and perhaps still getting hits today, but if not, to replace it will cost less than 25¢ in paint -- no attachment material needed -- and involve a simple park and drop).
Imagine the impact if just ten people in your own area could each find just one similar site and keep it going with fresh posts at a cost of less than 50¢ each every few days (i.e. $5 - $10 per month per person plus labor and mileage).

[10 JANUARY UPDATE: I am no longer monitoring this diary for new comments, but the signature file in any comment I make on Daily Kos directs to this diary, as well as other diaries and Open Thread comments. So if you find yourself here long after the active period of this diary is over, and want to make a comment or ask a question that you'd like a response to, be sure to post it as a response to one of my comments, so I'll pick it up on my NEW REPLIES page. Thanks. JohnT.]
