Report: Global warming threatens rich fall colors
Some climate scientists say that even if steps are taken now to limit global warming, temperatures in New England will rise enough over the next half-century that the source of much of that rich fall color, the sugar maples, will disappear from most of the region. Healthy stands of sugar maples may be found eventually no farther south than Canada and northern Maine.
So, thanks to people like Inhofe, the "Competitive Enterprise Institute" and Dickless Cheney, not only will future generations of New Englanders and tourists peep drab browns and yellows rather than the striking red maples, but maple syrup production in America will surely suffer, if not die completely.
I'm reminded of a conversation my mom heard at a cocktail party around the time of the first Arab oil embargo. One of the attendees, a blowhard Texan, when he discovered he was chatting with a Vermonter, joked, "Yeah, we got a bumper sticker in Texas: 'Drive fast--Freeze a Yankee!'"
The Vermonter, not missing a beat, replied, "We've got one, too: 'Let the Texans Eat Oil on their Pancakes!'"
Seems we all might have to acquire the taste.
