According to the
Pioneer Press,
Theresa Daly is offering a three-pronged proposal to reduce crime:
Maintaining federal funding for the Community Oriented Policing Services program that helps local cities and school district pay for police officers.
Establishing a federal registry to track sex offenders.
Making it a federal crime to possess chemicals with the intention of manufacturing methamphetamine.
First, kudos to the Daly campaign for continuing to make actual policy proposals. The first two proposals make a great deal of sense, but I think drug laws are best handled on the state and local levels.
The areas least able to afford community policing an the areas most in need of community policing. Putting federal dollars toward the problem is a good solution.
Sex offenders are notoriously difficult to treat, with high recidivism rates. Locking sex offenders away for life is the answer in many states. Strong, national tracking of sex offenders permits the opportunity to treat sex offenders while dramatically lowering the risk to the general public.
In other news, I'm told that there will be a fund raiser for the Daly and Patty Wetterling campaigns on September 4 at Patrick's Cabaret at 3010 Minnehaha Ave S in Minneapolis. (map) The suggested donation is $10 or $20. If you don't want to wait until September you can contriube to the Daly campaign or the Wetterling campaign now.
