We are 21 days out folks, 21 days between today and Democrat-Day. When we storm from our tiny little beacheads in places like New England, the Five Boroughs, MoTown, Baghdad by the Bay, Tinseltown, the PN-Dub, Ill-a-delph, and Second City, to liberate the Rockies, the Heartland, and even the Lone Star and Dixie from 12 long years of Neo-con Corporatist Fundagelical fascism. So now is NOT the time to rest easy and relax. Now is the time to stand up and push forward into the firefight.
Because for our brothers and sisters stuck behind enemy lines, those 12 years have been very, very long. Wage stagnation for anyone not name the Donald or Paris. Tax cuts for the rich and pink slips for the rest of us. Social insecurity. Health-care turned into Health mis-care. The return of guns and drugs and blood on our city streets. Gay bashing as national bloodsport. And melting icecaps - let's not forget those melting icecaps.
And that day is just about here. In 21 days. Three weeks to D-Day. Where will you be?
More on flip.
For a brief instant, it seemed like Dean's Cavalry was on its way. But Operation Orange Hat quickly turned into our Operation Market-Garden. Yet, we held on, licked our wounds, learned our lessons and prepared to fight another day.
Like an army needs bullets, fuel and food, so do political campaigns need cash and canvassers. I don't care how much you've given already - give until hurts - it'll make the victory all that sweeter.
But victory is not assured. Don't comfort yourself with tempting poll numbers and media spin. Charlie Cook may be a nice guy, but he'll still have a job regardless of what happens on D-Day. Our families may not.
This is going to be our Battle of the Bulge. The GOP is going to throw everything at our line - they'll drain their treasuries dry, they'll pour their 72-Hour Project shocktroops at every opening, they'll make the Willie Horton smears against the Duke look like Captain Kangaroo.
Because they KNOW. They know if we breach their lines and come flooding through, its ALL over. They've spit on us, denigrated us, took our jobs and healthcare and schools so they could get fat, sent our children off to a pointless war to die while they called us traitors. And they know we have long and excellent memories - hell, we still tell each other campfire stories around the Interwebs about the good old days with FDR and Truman! They've breached a civil compact with their countrymen. They've got nowhere to hide.
But if they hold the line - if they eke out a victory, even if razor-thin, its a whole new ballgame. They'll spin it as success. They'll regroup, restock and refuel. They'll come with both barrels full in 2008, riding the wave of some faux-hero of the people like Guiliani or McCain.
So don't let up. Don't get comfortable. Stay pissed and stay angry - you'll need it to drag your ass to a phonebank after a long day's work. Don't relax. Redouble whatever efforts you have been doing. Then redouble again. And if you haven't got off your ass yet, DO IT - because your fellows are taking flak while you munch on cupcakes.
If you can walk, you can canvass. If you can talk, you can phonebank. If you got a job, you can donate. And if you have a pulse, you can vote.
It's 21 days to D-Day. Will you stand up and be counted?
