I just hung up from the fourth robocall in a week from the NRCC on behalf of John Doolittle. This one was to tell me what a boon to seniors the new Medicare Part D plan is and how well the new prescription drug coverage is working, and to warn me that that John Doolittle's nefarious opponent Charlie Brown is opposed to all this goodness.
But what is the NRCC thinking?
I know that trying to scare seniors about Social Security is a traditional campaign tactic that's been used by both parties over the years. But it strikes me that reminding seniors of the new drug plan and how Doolittle supports it just when the papers and TV newscasts are covering the joys of the doughnut hole doesn't seem like an incredibly effective vote-getting tactic.
And why are they calling me? I've been registered as a Democrat since 1973. I donate money to individual Democrats and to the Democratic Party. I have resignedly voted against John Doolittle for the past ten years, every time I've had a chance for as long as I've lived in the district, and I'm looking forward to voting enthusiastically for Charlie Brown this time. What brain trust figured out that calling people like me would be a useful way to spend Republican money this month? Is it just that the NRCC has never had to spend money in the 04 before and has no idea what it's doing?
No matter. I want those calls to keep coming. The content is entertaining in its clunkiness, and every penny the NRCC spends to try to convince me to vote for Doolittle is another penny they can't spend on persuading any waverers or on GOTV. (And if the content stays up to the current standard, they may actually prompt a few voters to go for Charlie this time.)
Just keep those calls coming to me, guys.
