This one is going to be short but Radio Canada is reporting that Kim Jong Il has announced that, following discussion with Chinese representatives, they have decided to stop their preparations for a second nuclear test.
The Chinese always had a lot of leverage on North Korea, especially by providing them for 80-90% of their oil imports at advantageous rates. It's about time they used it.
Update The report is now on the front page of the New York Times.
North Korean leader Kim Jong-il told visiting Chinese envoy Tang Jiaxuan that Pyongyang planned to conduct no further nuclear tests, South Korea's Yonhap news agency quoted a diplomatic source in China as saying on Friday.
President Hu Jintao sent a team of diplomats to Pyongyang earlier this week as speculation mounted that communist North Korea might be about to detonate a second nuclear device.
"Fortunately, my visit this time has not been in vain," Tang, Hu's special envoy, said at the opening of his meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice in Beijing.
Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing said Tang and the North Koreans also discussed how to kick-start stalled talks on Pyongyang's nuclear programmes.
