We got to looking at Senator Nelson's FEC Report.
Look, there are an awful lot of us who think we know about politics, and maybe we aren't quite the geniuses we think we are. But you don't have to be the ill-conceived yet politically-brilliant love child of James Carville and Karl Rove to know that Senator Nelson had this thing wrapped up the day Kitty announced her candidacy (talk about ill-conceived). Yet, as of September 30, he had damn near 15 million dollars in net receipts for his re-election campaign, and close to seven million cash on hand. Now that we're near the end of October, he's now got something closer to 18 million -- with more coming in all the time, no doubt.
Senator Nelson, you ought to share the wealth. There are candidates out there, from Miami to Pensacola, who need your help, today.
But before we get ahead of ourselves, we we want to point out that we're strong supporters of Senator Nelson, of course, and want to give him the benefit of the doubt.
Check out the plan, and help Florida Democrats after the jump:
You know, you can't criticize if you don't ask. It's an often-overlooked rule of thumb in politics. I mean, has anyone -- anyone aside from two-bit political hack in south St. Pete posting on a blog -- actually approached the Senator about supporting candidates locally?
Yes? No? Maybe?
We'll why don't we all ask Senator Nelson to help. It's so easy, it hurts. Let's round our number up a little and say that Senator Nelson has (or had, or will have) 15 million bucks for his re-election campaign sitting in a bank. Fifteen percent of that (if we've done the math right) is $2,250,000. (That's two million more than he's given so far, plus the thirty thousand he's raised for House races around the state.)
Is there anyone among us who doesn't believe that Senator Nelson can't afford to chuck fifteen percent of his haul, for a race he's going to win hands-down, towards some good Dems who need it?
If you think he can afford it, then we encourage you to reach out to Senator Nelson and tell him as much. And remember, let's be polite. After all, he is on our side. Let's thank him for his service, and ask him to please contribute fifteen percent of his campaign haul to the Florida Democratic Party to be distributed equitably (and quickly!) to state and local races across Florida.
We'll even make it easy for you. You can cut and paste this text (below), and click the link to the Senator's email address. Let him know that now is the time to give. There are some hungry candidates out there, and they need his help. Now.
Dear Senator Nelson:
Thank you for your service to Florida, and to America. I look forward to having you serve as my Senator for the next six years.
I also look forward to the unbelievably merciless drubbing you will deliver to the wicked and evil Katherine Harris, relegating her tainted, sub-par political career to the dustbin of history. Thank you.
As you are no doubt aware, due to a remarkable confluence of events, the U.S. House of Representatives is well within reach of the Democrats. Several of the seats in play are in Florida.
Also, there are several hotly contested State Representative and State Senate races here in Florida.
Senator Nelson, Florida Democrats need your help!
Please strongly consider donating fifteen percent of the money you have raised for your own race to the Florida Democratic Party, or to state and local races you deem highly competitive. Fifteen percent of the fifteen million you have already raised is only $2,250,000. Spread to competitive races throughout Florida, you could make a difference for so many Democrats, and never once put your own Senate seat in any jeopardy.
On behalf of Florida Democrats across the state, thank you for your consideration, and thank you again for your continued service in the United States Senate.
Sincerely,
your name
