The phone just rang and what I saw on the caller ID at first made me made, then it made me smile, then it made me think. . .
"Hi, this is Stacy from the Republican Party. . I'm just calling to tell you that President Bush will be coming to your area on such and such date. Can we count on you to join with other committed Republicans in supporting President Bush"?
OH. . .MY. . .GOSH. . .
I could hardly believe my ears. . .here was somebody calling me at home and asking me to join the minority of the 35% that still foolishly think this guy is doing his job!
"Um. . .No. . .and take me off of your list. Please know that it is a $5000 fine for every phone call after this one that you call my house". Needless to say, it felt good and Stacy was a little taken back.
Still not sure why Stacy thought I'd be interested in seeing the Decider in my town, much less why she thought I was a committed Republican!
It got me thinking, though. . .how many calls from the DNC have I received? None. How many invitations to go to a Democratic rally have I received? None. How many flyers for local Democratic candidates have I seen? One. As mad as it made me, it just drove home further the point I've been making for months now: ideas and conviction won't win elections. . .only action will. . .if we are to have a shot (and we DO have one) to take over one or both houses, then we're going to have to put forth a little more effort, a little more time, a little more word of mouth, a little more money (are you listening, Mr. Kerry?) and a LOT of Get Out The Vote in order to do it. Let's not learn the hard way. . .and believe me. . .any more of the current nonsense IS the hard way.
