I have a case of the pre-game jitters. We've all worked hard, we've all donated time and money, and yet, with ever present memories of the 2000 and 2004 elections, I feel that we haven't done enough. We have to continue our get out the vote effort. Make phone calls, go door to door, write a letter to your local newspaper. I live in an area that is solidly Republican. I read comments every day in my local paper about the peril our country would be in should the Democrats take control of Congress. I am NEVER comfortable with polls predicting Democratic gains in any office because I see and hear the strength of the Republican base every day.
With the New Jersey supreme court ruling allowing civil rights for same-sex couples and President Bush signing a bill allowing a 700 mile border fence, the issues that energize the right are back in the news. There is a letter to the editor in the Northwest Florida Daily News entitled 'GOP Must Vote!' espousing that it is dangerous to hand power over to
"the pro-abortion, Islamo-fascist-appeasing, cut-and-run, tax-raising far-lefters".
This idea, however radical, resonates with many Republicans here in North Florida and across the country and the GOP knows how to get them to the polls to cast their vote. We must get a positive message out and we must get voters to the polls.
Keep working hard. I don't think there are many of us who could stand to wake up on the morning of Nov.8 to a Congress still controlled by the Republican party.
