As we all know, our current faux-prosperity is unsustainable -- we just can't keep on jacking up the credit limits on the national MasterCard. When the Chinese and others cut off the easy-money spigot, the crash will come, and come hard, as others here have well documented.
But we should not assume that economic collapse will finally wake up American voters to the disastrous policies of the Republicans, and drive these voters back into the arms of the Democratic Party. The Republicans know the meltdown is coming, too (even if they're not saying so publicly), and you can bet they're working on the subsequent spin.
The poorest states in the union are almost solidly Republican. Impoverished Alabama voters overwhelmingly rejected an initiative that would have CUT THEIR TAXES, thanks in large part to GOP propaganda. Economic hard times don't automatically translate into progressive gains.
So how do we stay ahead of the game and get our message out? How can we ensure that the blame for the economy tanking is placed squarely where it belongs -- on the shoulders of Bush's reckless squandering of our treasury?
If we don't get in front of this discussion, prepare for mobs of angry, newly-unemployed former homeowners to start lynching anybody who might look like a liberal. Especially if the liberal, anticipating the collapse, has invested accordingly and has survived.
Discuss.
