Now that we've heard from Mama Bear and Papa Bear, let's get it just right and join Baby Bear.
Republicans have repeatedly demonstrated over the last 6 years that they have no interest in holding fair elections. They only have an interest in winning 'elections.'
They do it by stripping likely Democratic voters from election rolls. They do it by Gerrymandering. They do it by undersupplying Democratic precincts with voting machines (creating long lines.) They do it by sending out disinformation to likely Democratic voters. They do it by paralyzing Democratic GOTV efforts with call-and-hangup campaigns (as documented again on Olbermann last night.) They do it by filing lawsuits to prevent votes from being counted.
Can anyone in their right mind discount the possibility that they would also do it by rigging the software on electronic voting machines?
The only way we solve this problem is to insist on widespread nonpartisan exit polling with publicly available results. This is vitally important in all close races and in all elections that don't use paper ballots. It is absolutely ludicrous that in 21st century America we've got a situation where there is absolutely no way of determining if the votes in an election were counted fairly or not.
In the absence of nonpartisan exit polling, Democrats need to target the races where we're most suspicious of Republican shenanigans and exit poll, document complaints, get video evidence, etc. We also need to let our representatives and senators know that we strenuously object to elections being held in which paperless electronic voting machines are used. That's the most constructive way to get the problem solved.
Crying fraud based on one or two pieces of anecdotal evidence or claiming that everything is hunky dory based on wishful thinking (if not willful ignorance) are equally wrong-headed approaches and must be rejected.
