When the Foley scandal first broke, there was a need for somber moral outrage. We are now entering a phase where I think
Josh Marshall's approach is far more effective: mockery and ridicule.
These House Republicans are a bunch of clowns. Every day that Hastert and Boehner stay in office brings new absurdities and new opportunities for mockery. If I were a peripheral Democrat in Congress, I would loudly recommend that Hastert and Boehner stick around as long as they want. Every day these ludicrous legislators take up the media spotlight is a day that brings us closer to victory in November.
Some people will be annoyed by this next paragraph, but I have to say it. A little more humor, a lighter touch, would probably make us more effective voices in the blogosphere. We tend to be a little to angry and righteous, because we see so many of the atrocities up close. I'm not talking about folks like Atrios and Glenn Greenwald, who employ sarcasm to great effect. I'm mostly thinking about the people here at this site (Markos is the notable exception). So here's my unsolicited advice: think Aristophanes, not Jeremiah. Remember, it didn't go over well when the Republicans got all worked up about Monica.
I hope I don't sound like David Broder. I'm going to shut up now because I know how much people hate to talk about process.
