Daily Kos has flourished into a cosmopolitan site that features a considerable wealth of new content at any hour of the day. So cheers to all of us for that, and to Chief Boss Pooh-Bah Kos (may his epaulets be orange) for guiding us to the Big Time.
But there aren't enough diaries at night.
Now, I know that dKos is primarily an American site, and that the news cycle dips way down at night. And I know that we live in a big enough country that our friends in Hawaii are going to sleep even as our friends in Portland, Maine are waking up--to say nothing of all you folks abroad--so even the boundary of "night" can get a little vague around here. But, any way you slice it, there are about eight hours in the day with little or no front page action.
I would like that to change. I am hoping that some of you would like it too, which is why I am here tonight. Maybe we can do something about it.
We have a friend in the inestimable DarkSyde--who seems to post even more at night than during the day--and sometimes one of the front-pagers, or emeritus front-pagers, or even Markos himself on occasion, will come along and spice things up with a good late-night (or early-morning) diary. And, of course, there is a steady albeit diminished stream of user diaries throughout the night. But the front page is what really gives this community its deliciously lively feeling.
I would like more front page posting at night. If we can't do that right now, then perhaps we can plan for it next year when the new crew comes in. If one of the 2007 editors could devote himself or herself to the graveyard shift, I think there are a lot of people here who read the site during that part of the day and would greatly appreciate a representative.
What a front-pager might blog about while the traditional media sleeps is open to discussion. I for one think we could really stand to benefit from more international news. Yes, dKos is an American site, but, frankly, "Iraq" is the only argument I need to make in the case for proving that world events are very important to us. We could induct our own "foreign affairs expert," who we be in the position to blog international news while the rest of the world hustles and bustles even as most Americans snooze in their beds. A lot of international diaries get buried pretty fast when they are posted during dKos' busy hours, but here at night they might be more thoughtfully received.
My only assumption is that there are a sufficient number of people awake to read them. So take the poll, and, in the comments, let's hear what you think about this so-called "Nightly Kos."
