(Begin Snark) See, if the Democrats stick their neck out and take a stand on something, say, impeachment, then someone might disagree with them and vote against them in '08, and we just can't have that. No, we must guarantee that no one votes against any Democrat, and the only way to accomplish that is by triangulating and being neutral.
Everyone knows that the safest way to get reelected is not to offend anyone, and you can't offend anyone if you don't stand for anything, right? Sure some people will be offended that they worked so hard to get Democrats elected on the promise of change, but those people will always suck it up and vote Democratic anyway.
The Democrats swept this past election. We have retaken the house and the senate. We have real power. We have the power of subpoena, the power to set the legislative agenda, the power to bring articles of impeachment, and to put this country back on track.
But everyone knows that the best way to retain power is to not use it, ever. For example, the minority Democrats in the senate had the power to use the filibuster to block life-long appointments of right wing judges, but they chose not to use that power. And look at how great that worked out. Now we have a Supreme court that's slanted 6-3 Republican instead of only being slanted 5-4 Republican. And that can never be undone.
So I think it's important for Democrats in their new majority to learn the hard lessons of the judicial nominees: the only good fight is one that you're guaranteed to win. It's better to never fight at all than to risk losing. (End Snark)
No, I don't believe anything I just said, but there are those who not only do believe it, but are pushing hard on this new Congress to be the ultimate do-nothing congress, on the basis that any risk is an unacceptable risk. Some people even think defending and upholding the constitution is an unacceptable risk.
What exactly IS worth fighting for?
