As some of you are aware, I have been strongly opposed to attempted impeachment of the President because I think it would have no chance of success in the Senate. I am perfectly aware that the man deserves it, but I think it would not help either the country or the Democrats to move forward with an obviously doomed prosecution. It would make Democrats look like they had very poor judgment, and that opinion seems to be very broadly held by the Congressional leadership in the House and Senate, and outside the Congress.
So, is there any way I would change my mind on this question? (Paul Gaskin, you're going to love this!)
Surprisingly, yes. Forget impeachment on past behavior. What about the President's criminally disastrous behavior with respect to Iraq? Such unwillingness to alter course in his Iraq policy is a serious threat to the armed forces of the United States, to the security of the country, and to our standing in the world. His obstinate refusal to accept advice from (now) all quarters, is becoming grounds for removal. We do not elect an absolute monarch as President. He is required to take notice of the Congress and the people. I don't want to get all pompous and preachy about this, but the Speaker of the House and the Majority Leader have every reason to go to the President in January and warn him that his position on Iraq is now an abuse of power and he risks impeachment articles being prepared on that question alone if he does not make swift changes more in line with what the Congress wants.
Ya happy now, Paul?
