Dems have a great chance to pick up more Senate seats in 2008. Let's look at some of the races that could be favorable.
1. Wayne Allard in CO - He's a dullard who doesn't accomplish a lot in the Senate.
2. John Sununu in NH - He's well liked, but so were Bass and Bradley. He can be beaten the way NH is headed.
3. Lamar Alexander in TN - Ford v. Alexander?
4. Warner in VA - He'd be very hard to beat, but there have been rumors that he won't run so I'm listing this race as a good pickup opportunity with the right candidate. I don't think Mark Warner would take on John Warner again - he's already tried it once. But he might run for an open seat.
5. Coleman in MN - MN is pretty close to a 50-50 state. There might be an opportunity here.
6. Dole in NC - She's got the name and undoubtedly a lot of money, but I wouldn't rule out an upset.
There are a few Dems who will be serious targets for R's, but only one that I'd consider a tough race to win.
1. Landrieu in LA - She's squeaked through twice so she's vulnerable - especially if the GOP presidential candidate wins handily in LA.
2. Johnson in South Dakota - It can be a serious R state, but also a serious D state - they just re-elected their one House Member, Dem Stephanie Herseth, with like 70 percent. Depends on the election trends in 2008 and on who the candidates are - Johnson could be hurt if an R wins the presidential race by a lot.
3. Baucus in Montana - He's pretty senior and pretty well-liked. Plus you've got a Dem governor and Senator Tester.
I'm not too worried about either Johnson or Baucus, absent a big R wave coming back at us. Landrieu on the other hand - well, that race scares me. But that's about it for threatened seats.
So - there's a good chance to pick up more Senate seats next cycle.
