The war was a central issue to this election, and we need to work to be sure that is remembered. At JustForeignPolicy.org, we would like to record anti-war victories, including both anti-war (or troops-out-now or set-a-deadline) candidates who beat pro-war (or no-deadline) candidates as well as successful ballot initiatives. Please take the time to post a comment noting about those you are aware of.
Here's some examples:
Cook County - An antiwar county ballot initiative to "immediately begin an orderly and rapid withdrawal" from Iraq passed with huge majorities in Chicago, Cook County suburbs and other Illinois cities. At midnight yesterday the vote was 80-20 in favor of the referendum in the city. Similarly large tallies were found in the suburbs.
This referendum was placed thanks to the work of Chicagoans Against War and Injustice and the Illinois Coalition for Peace and Justice.
Here's the 'Yes' percentages in other Illinois cities:
DeKalb 58%
Geneva 52%
Aurora 58%
Riverside 62%
Downers Grove 55%
Champaign 58%
Cunningham 65%
Whiteside 58%
Springfield 59%
Berwyn 70%
Oak Park 75%
Urbana 65%
There were a few other noteworthy initiatives in Indiana, including a vote in Urbana-Champaign in favor of impeaching the president and vice-president for war, torture, and illegal surveillance. The 'Yes' vote was 50.6%
In Urbana, Illinois, 60% of voters said the governor should resist deployment of Illinois National Guard to Iraq.
