This whistle isn’t so impressive, is it? However, you will never hear it again.
The baiji, the Chinese river dolphin, is functionally extinct. There may be a few left. Who knows. But the first large marine mammal in sixty years, since the Carribean Monk Seal, is essentially gone.
Lipotes vexilifier is no more. It has gone to meet its maker. It is an ex-dolphin. Through a combination of increased shipping in the Yangtze River, pollution and hydroelectric dams, this mammal just couldn’t compete.
Two other species will likely share its fate. The Yangtze Finless Porpoise and the Irrawaddy Dolphin are probably next.
