Phill Kline, Kansas’attorney general, filed charges against Wichita doctor George Tiller, one of the few doctors in the country who will perform late term abortions. Tiller and his clinic have endured decades of harassment from anti-abortion zealots. Tiller was shot in both arms by a protester in 1993, and his clinic was bombed in 1985.

Oh Phill. Your dying gasp for political relevancy is so poignant.
If you haven’t been following the wacky antics of Phill Kline, here’s a quick overview:
Phil was elected to Kansas Attorney General in 2002 and spent his time there trying to fish through women’s private medical records looking for evidence of unspecified crimes, sentencing a homosexual teen to ten years in prison for statutory rape, requiring doctors and other professionals to report all underage teenage sexual activity as abuse, re-instituting the Kansas death penalty, and generally being an asshole.

He lost badly in November to challenger Pat Morrison, who switched parties expressly to run against Phill. Phill leaves office in three weeks. Unfortunately, the Republicans nominated Phill to replace Morrison as Johnson County prosecutor to fill Morrison’s vacated seat, so despite his overwhelming rejection by Kansas voters, we still have to put up with this jackass for another two years.
These charges are obviously one final huzzah for him. To quote Dr. Tiller’s attorney, Dan Monnat:
``The filing of criminal charges by Phill Kline is the last gasp of a defeated and discredited politician,'' the attorney said. ``Rather than executing his duty as a prosecutor to see that justice is done, he has chosen to engage in a malicious and spiteful prosecution on the eve of Christmas.''
Let us hope that Paul Morrison can return the Attorney General’s office to its business of investigating and prosecuting real crimes. But the teens of Johnson County had better start checking under the couch before they start snogging. Phill or one of his nutty minions could be lurking.
Update: and as it turns out, a judge dismissed the case before it was a few hours old.

Must have been a pretty solid case, backed up with a lot of evidence, huh? Too bad this activist judge had to get in the way. <snark>
And that concludes this weeks moment of Phill!
Tune in next week as Phill begins prosecuting pharmacies for selling KY jelly.
