Sunday morning and I was up early because Nestle convinced me it was time for his breakfast and to let him out in the yard. The television hereabouts on Sunday morning brings a fine set of religious programs, each seeming to have the same set of points:
- Make everyone Christian
- Eliminate secular holidays
- Support our troops by keeping them over there to wipe out Muslims
- SEND US MONEY.
Then, on CBS Sunday Morning, here is a profile on Cat Stevens, now Yussef Islam, who agrees that he was wrong to agree with the Fatwa that Salman Rashdie should be killed for his writing at the time, but it is still in the Koran that blasphemy is to be punished with death. (see, all religions seem to like death a lot, even though their basic commandments all have a "Thou shalt not kill" statement).
Then Joe Lieberman popped up on TV with a bunch of others saying that if we pull out of Iraq, or even indicate that we are going to at some time, we will be perceived as being in fear and the death producing war will follow us home (Shiite or Sunni militias attack Nebraska?).
To me, the principal attraction on Religion Day is the absolutely insane D. James Kennedy, whose Coral Ridge Hour produces television specials to attack anyone who may enjoy American Fiction (like The DaVinci Code) and to prove that Darwin was some kind of heretic who gave us the defined evil of evolution. To Kennedy, it is what he believes and nothing else... no room for anyone else's faith and certainly no room in his America for the faithless.
I hope you all have a happy Religion Day, hope you all get to think about this war, which we now know that the departing Rumsfeld admitted in a memo was not working, and hope you all get ready for the season of peace which is apparently upon us.
Actually, as long as there is religion, I don't think there will be peace.
